During national apprenticeship week 2024, we sent Harry Robbins, our Business Administration apprentice who wants to train to be a Bid Writer, to spend some time out on site with one of our Electrical Installation apprentices to find out more about the other apprenticeship roles available across the business.
About Harry:
Name: Harry Robbins
Age: 18
Apprenticeship: Level 3 Business Administration
About Harry’s Apprenticeship: Harry found the role through the GOV.UK apprenticeships service and interviewed as a trainee Bid Writer, sighting his interests in English and writing as key qualities for the position. He then joined the team in July 2023, with the plan to complete his Apprenticeship within a year, whilst also learning different facets of the construction industry and his role within it.
Day to Day: Harry works within the Pre-Construction team on all working winning processes from initial expression of interest to tender submission. He also works on projects such as producing marketing materials, including posters, for our charity programme.
After his Apprenticeship: Harry says, “I am looking forward to completing my apprenticeship in July 2024 and continuing to work with R. Benson and further develop my education within the construction industry beyond my apprenticeship, as well as explore different elements of the business whilst establishing a clear career path.”
What Harry had to say about his time on site: I recently visited a site in Barnet and interviewed one of our Electrical apprentices working on our Notting Hill Genesis voids contract about his job and life as an electrical apprentice. When I arrived at our site compound on Montrose Avenue, Burnt Oak I was given a site induction by Head of Compliance, Mark Martin, which covered all Health and Safety protocols and he provided me with the correct PPE. I then travelled to a void property we are currently working on under our Voids Framework with Notting Hill to meet one of our apprentices, Efe Guzel. It was really interesting to see a live project and find out more about the Electrical Apprenticeship course.
About Efe:
Name: Efe Guzel
Age: 19
Apprenticeship: Level 3 Electrical Installation
About Efe’s Apprenticeship: After completing his L2 qualification, Efe attended a G15 jobs fair, where he met with a number of contractors, following an interview process, he joined the team as an Apprentice Electrician in August 2023, with aims to complete his course within two years. Since joining the business, Efe has grown more confident in his roles, with support from senior electricians on site helping him learn while he works. When asked how he’s finding work with R. Benson, Efe said, “With other jobs it felt like a chore, the same thing every day. Here it’s nice, there’s always something different to do.”
Day to Day: Efe’s day starts at the site compound on Montrose Avenue, Burnt Oak where he will meet with the team and ensure he has all the tools and materials he needs for the day. They will then travel to different sites, where Efe will complete tasks such as unloading tools, applying first and second fix installations as well as more complex installations, dependant on the needs of the job. Throughout the day, Efe’s supervisor, Ivan, will give Efe tasks to do, whilst always making himself available, should Efe require assistance with anything. At the end of the day Efe and the team will clear away all tools and materials, ensuring nothing is left behind and no hazards are left out.
After His Apprenticeship: Efe hopes to stay on with the business and continue a career as an electrician; “I wouldn’t mind learning more, maybe other trades like plumbing or painting and decorating.”
