SeeAbility Garden Makeover

R. Benson staff take part in a garden makeover volunteer day for SeeAbility at their Millennium Centre in Leatherhead.

R. Benson have partnered with SeeAbility in 2019, as part of the R. Benson Charity Programme, to raise funds to support the work the charity does in providing specialist support, accommodation and eye care help for people with learning disabilities, autism and sight loss. As part of the partnership we were invited to take part in a volunteer day at the Millennium Centre. Following discussions, we decided that we could make a real difference to their garden space by making it more accessible for service users.

We gathered together a team of 12 staff including Directors, Managers, Tradespeople and a work experience student, to transform the tired garden and improve the accessibility for the centre users. Tasks included installing new non-slip decking, refurbishing steps, making good and painting walls and railings, weeding and tidying up. We also gifted the centre with a new compost bin, wind chimes and a voucher for a local garden centre.

The highlight of the day was having the opportunity to meet the centre users before a group of them headed off for their weekly tandem cycle, partnered with sighted volunteers. It was clear by the enthusiasm of all involved how enjoyable they find this weekly activity.

Saujan Pandhak, from SeeAbility said “Seeing the transformation of the garden at the Millennium Centre will definitely be one of the highlights for this year. The quality of work by the R. Bensons team impressed the entire SeeAbility family and we have nothing to say but a huge thank you for choosing to spend the day bettering our facilities.”
